A surprising number of selected winners never respond.

If that person does not reply, is ineligible, or cannot complete the claim process, the organizer selects another eligible winner.

This is one reason to use an email address you genuinely check. A dedicated contest email is a great idea, but it should include your real name and be monitored regularly.

Most winners receive an email, a phone call, or a private message on social media. Depending on the prize, the organizer may verify your name, address, age, and eligibility before arranging delivery, a digital prize, or local pickup.

You should never have to pay to receive a normal contest prize.

Be more careful with social-media giveaways

Instagram and other social platforms can be useful places to find contests, but they are less scrutinized than promotions run by established brands.

Look for a real business account, clear rules, a prize that makes sense for the brand, Canadian eligibility, and an official way for the organizer to contact winners.

Be especially careful of copied accounts that comment, “You won!” and ask you to click a link. Check the account handle, review the original contest post, and contact the brand through its official website if anything seems suspicious.
